Biography

Berniemack Arelláno is just a simple and boring guy who wants to go amok whenever he’s being prevented going somewhere else. Since birth, he has been traveling with his family and friends. He dared himself not to be a tourist, but a sojourner, a wanderer, a traveler, an explorer and most of all, a professional commuter. Seeing the world is not enough, he likes to experience the culture and the thrill--the spice of life. Since then, he has been dreaming to emanate Ian Wright and Diego Buñuel’s travels.

Philippines will hold three local conferences about Google Map Maker this April 2012, after the successful Google Map Maker Workshop which was held in Makati City last March. Roxas City Airport perhaps this is one of the easiest airports when it comes to accessibility, since it is only 2 kilometers out of downtown. Roxas City Airport serves as the main gateway for the province of Capiz in northern Panay Island and north-eastern Iloilo as well. There are daily flights in and out of Roxas to Manila, Philippines’ capital.

At Home in Manila: Miss Eva Kalaw’s Ancestral Home in Sampaloc

It was 2008 when I was still a part-time researcher for the inventory of old homes and buildings in Manila for Ateneo’s project, together with HCS member Jeffery Yap. One of the homes on our Sampaloc inventory was a green two-storey house located in Lepanto Street (now S. Loyola). Amidst the colossal buildings that surround it, the petite home still maintains its suburban feel. When we knocked the gates and asked for an interview, it wasn’t just an ordinary person who welcomed us. It was former senator Eva Estrada-Kalaw–unexpectedly.

The Adventure: How Travelling Changed My Life

Leap of Faith...well, it looks like a wide-body aircraft trying to lift off from the runway!

Call me a nomad.

Since birth, I have been roaming around the Philippines and was perhaps destined to roam the country and perhaps the world–how I wish. There was no event in my life that didn’t involve traveling. It is part of me and my family. It wouldn’t be me if it wasn’t for those frequent “family-work oriented excursions” that we had back in my childhood days or my adventures into the unknown.

Traveling is part of my system, and the way that defines Berniemack and HabagatCentral.

Pasinaya 2012: Celebrating the Throbbing Philippine Arts

Wouldn’t it be grander if we conclude the Philippine arts month in a festive mood? Pasinaya was all about that last 26th of February, 2012 in its seventh season. It brings Philippine artists all over the country in a celebration of music, dance, theater, visual, film, literary, workshops and a lot more—organized by none other than the Cultural Center of the Philippines. This year, with more than 100 activities related to arts and culture, thousands of students, families, individuals, local and even foreign tourists flocked the CCP Main Theatre (National Theater or Tanghalang Pambansa)—currently the largest arts gathering in the country (and I tell you, there were a lot of people…a lot!)

Torogan: The Forgotten Heritage of Dayawan Marawi

Dayawan Torogan today

It was raining when we came back at Marawi City that November afternoon. It was cool but somehow the atmosphere was melancholic. Among other things we would like to see in the Maranao world, it is the traditional living quarters of the royal families called torogan. It’s a good thing that there are a few that survived time and elements just near the city, in the district known to locals as “Tuka” which sits beside the placid Lake Lanao.

Herencia y Poder: Zamboanga City Hall

A la Patria y Servicio Público! Zamboanga City Hall and Rizal Monument

In “El Pueblo,” as the local Zamboangueños call their city center or downtown, is an edifice that is synonymous to the city and perhaps throughout the history of Mindanao. The Zamboanga City Hall stands majestic amidst the well-groomed parks of Plaza Pershing (named after the American general John “Black Jack” Pershing) and Plaza Rizal. The edifice itself became Mindanao and Sulu’s bastion of power (the capital city) for several years during the American colonial era, making Ciudad de Zamboanga the capital of the whole southern islands itself!
